Our Purpose

The purposes of this organization are to maintain and preserve Mariners Memorial Park, Deer Isle, Hancock County, Maine as a park open to the public for low impact recreation; to promote the knowledge and love of gardening; to aid in the protection of native flora and fauna; and to encourage the citizens of the Deer Isle and Stonington communities to plant native flowers and trees for the beautification and edification of the community.

The Evergreen Garden Club held its first meeting on December 12, 1956 and Capt. Walter Scott was elected club president. The club was federated on February 13, 1957.

Since then, the garden club has established and maintained gardens throughout Deer Isle and Stonington. Each year we raise funds by holding a Plant Sale, selling plants we dig up from our own gardens, and organizing a Garden Tour, giving island gardeners a chance to see what other nature lovers are doing in their gardens.

We welcome new members of all ages and areas of interest, from rose gardens to organic farms. If you love watching things grow and don't mind getting your hands dirty, you're just the kind of person we want in the Evergreen Garden Club.

In June of 1976, the Garden Club Federation of Maine, Inc. presented the Evergreen Garden Club with an award for "Preservation of beauty in recognition of restoration work" carried out in Mariner's Memorial Park.

In August of 2021, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented the Evergreen Garden Club with an Award for Excellence in Community Service, for the preservation and maintenance of Mariners Memorial Park.
